Lot’s has been goin on over here, and I have had a few people ask WHEN a new post was coming, and it actually made me realize, people ARE reading, which made me super excited.
With a BABY coming in 3 months,
I have plenty of nesting projects, NEW types of beauty secrets, and of course more recipes to share. That’s right, baby boy Shields will be here December 31st, aka New Years Eve! I couldn’t be more excited, and though my posts won’t be centered around pregnancy, I will certainly share every tip that makes you feel more glamorous while pregnant!
Anyways, with it feeling like full blown fall now, and having just had my grandma here, we went through some of my old family recipes. Most were my mom’s (from a super thoughtful wedding shower gift that two of my dearest friends got me, a compilation of ALL of my mom’s recipes), but some were also my great grandmother’s. Last week, I made 2 batches of my great grandma’s apple crisp, and tonight, I made a few modifications.

Let’s start with the fact that I recruited Aaron Shields himself to help me out tonight, and that was something that deserved to be photographed.
Now, we’ll start with the apple crisp. Apples are my only current pregnancy craving. I’ll eat any kind I can get my hands on, but Honeycrisp are my favorite this time of year! SO I chose those. They are also HUGE right now, so if you go with a smaller apple, you’ll want to use one more apple that what I specify below.
Start by preheating your oven to 350. Now grab 3 large apples, and peel, slice, and chop them into small cubes. Put them into an 8×8 pan, and sprinkle with cinnamon. (you could also drizzle with caramel! I thought of this after baking the two batches tonight)
Next, mix the topping. I LOVE oats, but the original Touch family recipe didn’t call for them, so if you chose to go without, simply eliminate those, no other changes need to be made. Mix together the following ingredients;
3/4 cup flour (I used King Arthur’s gluten free All Purpose Flour)
1/2 cup sugar (original recipe called for 1 cup sugar, I chose to do half sugar, half brown and it was delish!)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 t. nutmeg
1/2 t. cinnamon
1/2 t. salt
1/3 cup old fashion oats
1/2 cup melted butter
Mix these all together until they are a funky slightly crumbly/slightly sticky combo. At this point, it is easiest to use your hands to tear little pieces off and crumble over top of the apples. Now I LOVE the topping, so tonight I made a double batch of topping, and used 5 apples, and made two batches with a higher topping:apple ratio.
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. You will want to gobble it all up, and I say go for it! Try at least one bowl with some vanilla ice cream 😉
Now, for the easiest-cherry-or-apple-or-bluberry-or-peach-cobbler-ever-known-to-man-recipe. You ready? Don’t blink, this is IT.
Start by choosing your filling. I chose cherry, because it was mom and I’s fav. Cover an 8×8 inch baking pan.
Now for the topping. Sprinkle dry yellow cake mix (yes, the box) until it covers all of the fruit completely. I used Lillabee’s yellow cake mix, but my mom and I used to use Jiffy yellow cake mix. Do they even make that anymore? Now, melt a stick of butter. (cough cough, yes…a whole stick). Spoon the melted butter over the top of the cake mix. NOW, you’re done! Yep, that’s it. Bake that baby for 25 minutes at 350, and you’ve got a delicious, midwest dessert.
If you add an entire stick of butter to any recipe, it immediately becomes a ‘midwest dessert’ 😉
I hope these two recipes will satisfy your fall recipe cravings, as well as give you a quick dessert option when you need to throw something together for a party!
Now that I have finally gotten around to posting my first blog post since January, I’m going to do something else crazy that I don’t do nearly enough of, like laundry. Or I’ll stay here on the couch, pinned down by this babe….
